Alexia de Ville de Goyet, an artist who expresses herself on wallpaper!
The Belgian brand Tenue de Ville reinvents wallpaper by combining graphic elegance with artisanal craftsmanship. At its helm, the talented Alexia de Ville de Goyet answers our questions and invites us into her creative universe.
How was Tenue de Ville born?
The idea of Tenue de Ville was born from the desire to bring together several facets of my practice: drawing, spatial composition, and a certain aesthetic rigor. I trained in scenography and have always been drawn to materials, atmospheres, and storytelling. Wallpaper naturally emerged as the ideal medium: it creates ambiance, almost like a set design, while remaining part of daily life. In 2014, I launched the brand with the ambition to offer sensitive, locally made creations that bring harmony to interiors.
What is the brand’s DNA?
The DNA of Tenue de Ville is a meeting of poetry and precision, of hand-drawn design and high production standards. Each collection starts from a sensitive universe: a journey, a texture, a memory, a natural form… I always begin with drawing – in ink, pencil, or collage – and let the textures guide the collection. Great care is given to the colors, often inspired by nature or light. All production is carried out in Belgium or Europe, with a constant focus on quality and sustainability.
You are both an artist and a business leader. How do you manage these two roles?
It’s a real balancing act, and it took me time to find it. Some days, the artist takes over; other days, the entrepreneur must steer the ship. I separate my time: I reserve creative periods, free from commercial pressure, to explore, draw, and experiment. At other times, I focus on managing the brand, trade shows, partnerships, and production. What helps is that both roles feed each other: technical or commercial constraints can inspire creativity, and artistic intuition often leads to unexpected solutions.
How do you see your work and the brand evolving in the coming years?
I feel a desire to lead the brand towards more freeform, artisanal creations, in addition to wallpaper collections. I've been exploring recycled materials, weaving techniques, and papier-mâché, and I’d like to open the brand to objects, wall pieces, or even custom-designed spaces. There’s also a deeper reflection on sustainability, manual craftsmanship, and material connection… I envision Tenue de Ville as a true laboratory for contemporary decorative art, at the crossroads of design, art, and craft.
As a Brussels native, do you have any great spots to recommend?
Brussels is full of inspiring places – both hidden and lively. I particularly love wandering through the Marolles district with its antique shops, galleries, and authentic cafés. For a coffee break, I recommend MOK or Forcado, a charming Portuguese tearoom on Rue Dansaert. In terms of culture, the Boghossian Foundation – Villa Empain is always a wonderful discovery, both for its Art Deco architecture and its exhibitions, as is Wiels, a contemporary art center housed in a former brewery. And when I need fresh air, I often escape to Duden Park or the Bois de la Cambre.
